h2h Corner ~ Brett Gardner, the starter…

The Yankees are important. The centerfielder for the Yankees is important. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 Opening Day centerfielder is Melky, er, Brett Gardner.

The search for Bernie Williams’ replacement is over, sort of, as Brett Gardner received the starting nod today.

Gardner is fast, like Michael Bourn/Willy Taveras/Carlos Gomez/Scott Podsenick/Juan Pierre/Luis Castillo (well not anymore) fast. The Flash fast.

Captain Jetes will man the lead-off spot with the caveman batting behind him, which likely means Gardner will end up typically at the bottom of the order. Still, that could help with runs scored. If he can hit .265+ he could run across the plate 60 times and swipe 50 bags. At this moment, he seems like a lock for 35 stolen bases. This is not something to quickly dismiss, as players like Willy Taveras, he of the .319 OBP and .318 SLG percentage, are 20th round draft picks. Still, do not expect any power, he is simply a 1.5 category (stolen bases and runs, sort of) aid.
