Players get hot and cold over a seven-day period, it’s as sure as the samples are small.
That is why Katy created the Hot ‘N’ Cold All-stars.
‘Cause you’re hot…you’re yes…you’re in…you’re up
Chris Heisey– I don’t know a baseball fan alive who doesn’t like Chris Heisey– he, sort of, reminds me of Cary Conklin – man Redskin fans loved that back-up QB. Well, I guess the comparison isn’t that apt as Heisey has put together amazing weeks (and showed he is damn good at his sport…Conklin, not so much). Over the last seven days, Heisey is 8/18 with four homers. In just 270 plate appearances this year, he has amassed 17 dingers with an astounding .249 ISO. Still, he is striking out a ton and swinging and missing a lot. I keep hearing that he is better than Drew Stubbs – he isn’t yet. He has a decent line drive rate and is benefiting from a good bit of his balls landing over the fence. Grab him while he is hot, but playing time could continue to be sporadic and he isn’t Jonny Gomes.
Lonnie Chisenhall – The non-Jason Kipnis Indians prospect, Chisenhall has been largely ignored by the fantasy community. However, he went 7/25 over the last seven days with three bombs. He probably wasn’t quite ready for prime time when he got the call (he sits at .234/.263/.421), but he has four homers this month. He is still getting fooled a lot (look at the K-rate and swinging strike percentage compared to his Honey I Shrunk the Kids walk rate). However, if you need power from third (and really who doesn’t), you might as well kick the tires at this point – he is certainly someone you can shuttle in and out of your line-up on off days.
Gerardo Parra – I have a special insert Parra card so I like him – it’s a default reflex sort of love. Still, Parra always seems to do a few things each year to make him interesting. To wit, his last seven days: 8/21 with a homer and steal. He is now 28 for his last 86. He is slowly getting more looks at the top of the line-up which should help with runs. He’s not a sexy option, but he should hit for a decent average and score some runs.

Jose Constanza – I’ve resisted writing about Constanza for as long as humanly possible. But, as noted in the Chicken Roaster episode from Seinfeld, you just can’t shake the name or the jingle “By Mennen.” Alright readers, I’ll be honest, the first time I heard about Constanza, I found him very irritating, but after seeing him play for a couple of times, he sorta got stuck in my head, Constanza! Well, over the last seven days, the plucky fourth outfielder has gone 10/23 with a homer and three steals. After looking like a promising little player in 2008 (at AA for the Indians he went .282/.378/.342 with 49 steals), Constanza hasn’t done much of note. Even that impressive season is marred by the fact that he was repeating the level. Constanza’s one positive attribute, speed, is rendered nearly void by the fact that he hasn’t figure out how to walk or really get on base without a BABIP north of .360. His MLB BABIP sits at .450 this year despite a paltry line drive rate (15.4%) and massive ground ball rate (69.2%). He doesn’t swing and miss, so he will put the ball in play, and we all know how many seeing eye grounders it takes to turn a .250 hitter into a .300 hitter, but he’s never going to get on base enough to make his speed matter. His upside is a slightly broken down version of Juan Pierre.

Katy Perry and her awesome song “E.T.” remained atop the Billboard Charts for fifth week in a row. There is a competitor mounting though in Britney Spears. Her tune, “Till the World Ends,” got a huge bump based on rumors of a potential remix with Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha. Yes that is the most ridiculous sentence I have ever written.
Still, there’s a lesson in the inanity. If you’re in first, you need to scrape and claw to maintain it. If you’re behind the leader, it doesn’t hurt to remix your roster a bit…as long as you’re bringing on the likes of a Ke$ha.
Remember, players get hot and cold over a seven-day period, it’s as sure as the samples are small.

Matt Joyce – It’s hard to beat an 8/16 with two HRs seven-day stretch. He was like the Brave Ulysses if you ask me (man that was awful). Still, those were the first homers of the season for Joyce, who is somewhat underwhelming in the power department. In 98 plate appearances this year his isolated power is .161, Continue reading →

Maximizing every drop of value in every pick is hugely important. Taking a player in the fifth round that you could just as easily have taken in the sixth round is a major mistake. To avoid this, you need to know all about Average Draft Position (ADP). Continue reading →

There has been a deluge of coverage surrounding Manny. I’ve never loved him as a fantasy entity and am ambivalent about him as a player/human, so I was mostly happy that he got suspended. I would love to see the hypocrisy within baseball torn down. Bonds is vilified because he was a jerk and a successful cheat, yet Petitte gets a free pass? Continue reading →
